  • Catherine Grinstead

    DVM

    Dr. Cathy Grinstead graduated from the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She completed her internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in 1997, and has remained with us since then as a general practitioner. Dr. Grinstead enjoys hiking, camping, running, and backpacking with her husband Jim. She also likes to gardening with native plans, reading, and to spend time with her dogs Mango and Luna, and cats Monkey and Cricket.

  • Jill Mikovich-Haight

    DVM

    Dr. Jill Mikovich-Haight graduated from the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006 and joined the VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in April 2007after working at an area emergency clinic for eight months. She loves the combination of general medicine and emergency that she gets to see at SAMG, as opposed to seeing all emergency cases. During her veterinary training, she participated in research on feline infectious diseases and acquired a never-ending love of our feline friends. She also loves to see dogs. Her favorite cases to see are dermatology, internal medicine, emergency/urgent care, and who doesn't love playing with healthy puppies and kittens?! . Dr. Mikovich-Haight enjoys reading, traveling, hiking, and spending time with her family and friends including her dogs Spinner and Bailey, and cats Sabrina, Scarlett, Gus, and Jasper, all of whom are rescues from SAMG (except Spinner, who she has had since 2000).

  • James F. Biggart III

    DVM

    Dr. Biggart is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons since 1977, and joined VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in 2003. In addition to his extensive surgical experience, he has authored more than a dozen articles in his field, which have been published in a variety of respected veterinary references and journals. He has also served as the President for both the Association of Certified Veterinary Medical Specialists and for the Association for Veterinary Orthopedic Research. Dr. Biggart received his DVM degree at Texas A&M University and his Master of Science from Colorado State University.

  • William Garfield

    DVM

    Dr. Garfield graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. He practiced in Louisiana for two years before relocating to southern California where he spent the next nine years in private practice. In 1991 he bought Carmichael Animal Hospital, which he owned and operated as a one doctor practice until 2009, when he sold his practice to VCA and began practicing at Sacramento Animal Medical Group. He enjoys both medicine and surgery. His wife Susan and daughter Emily keep him busy in his spare time. They have one cat and one dog. Hobbies include bicycle and motorcycle riding. .

  • Karen Hume-Smith

    DVM

    Dr. Karen Hume-Smith grew up in Seattle, Washington. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis. During her veterinary training, Dr. Hume-Smith participated in research on feline ophthalmology and after graduation she completed a one-year rotating small animal internship at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center. Dr. Hume-Smith joined VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in 2011. During her free time she enjoys traveling with her husband, snuggling with her cats Elwood and Otis, and outdoor activities such as snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, and white water rafting.

  • Kate Hamon

    DVM

    Dr. Kate Hamon was born in Chelmsford, UK and has lived most of her life in Chapel Hill, NC. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. During this time, Dr. Hamon carried out a research study on diagnostic imaging in feline patients with kidney disease. After graduation she completed a one-year rotating small animal internship in medicine and surgery at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center. Dr. Hamon joined VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in July of 2013. During her free time she enjoys a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, camping, mountain biking, and scuba diving. She also likes to spend time with her dogs, Freyja and Sadie. She maintains dual citizenship and travels back to the UK every year to visit family.
